The ChilZone
A partnership model to stop hospital innovation from dying on a shelf
Hospitals have a technology problem: new tools arrive with fanfare, get used for a year, then sit on a shelf when updates lapse, staff turn over, and institutional knowledge evaporates. The ChilZone — a concept and platform for a Children's Hospital Innovation Lab at Montefiore — was designed to break that cycle. Rather than another one-off deployment, it proposed a long-term partnership between a hospital and a technology company, generating sustained innovation through co-creation and collaboration. The platform became the umbrella under which patient experiences like Secret Garden and Elephant's Garden were developed — and the Montefiore relationship it built kept bearing fruit well after the initiative itself concluded. Proof that the right organizational model matters as much as the technology itself.
