A living AR monument to the Black San Diegans who built the city's future
We Stand On Their Shoulders transforms a public park into a digital monument celebrating Black San Diegans who made a difference. The design turns on a single visual metaphor: each towering display pairs a historical figure with the silhouette of a child behind them — and as visitors walk around the piece, they discover the child standing on hills overlooking the San Diego skyline, connecting the city's progress directly to the people who fought for it. Unlike stone monuments, the AR tribute resists weathering and vandalism, incorporates text panels and community-recorded oral histories, and keeps growing — a monument designed never to be finished or forgotten. Recognized by the National Park Service's African American Civil Rights Network.
